Promotions tab
Gmail's tab for marketing email — separate from the Primary inbox. Engagement is lower but not zero.
The Promotions tab is one of Gmail's category tabs that separates marketing email from the Primary inbox. Gmail automatically classifies incoming email and routes typically-promotional messages (newsletters, sales emails, transactional confirmations with marketing) to Promotions. Users can override the classification or disable the tabs entirely.
Engagement on Promotions-tab email is lower than Primary-tab email — opens drop 30–50%, clicks drop similarly — but it isn't zero. Engaged subscribers check Promotions intentionally, especially for brands they care about. Promotions classification isn't a deliverability failure; it's a different inbox context.
Optimizing for Primary placement involves reducing the obvious "this is marketing" signals: explicit promotional language, dense link patterns, high image-to-text ratios, common spam-trigger phrasing. Some of this can be controlled at the content layer; some is structural (any email with multiple unsubscribe-list-style headers will skew toward Promotions). Trying too hard to game Primary placement on marketing email tends to backfire; focus on engagement, which improves classification long-term.
